Venous Stasis

Venous Stasis

Poor Circulation in the Legs and Feet

Managing Swelling, Discoloration, and Circulatory Complications

Venous stasis, or venostasis, occurs when blood flow from the legs to the heart becomes sluggish, causing fluid to pool in the lower extremities. This buildup leads to swelling, enlarged veins, and changes in skin color or texture. If left untreated, venous stasis can progress to painful open sores known as venous ulcers and increase the risk of blood clots.

What Causes It

Venous stasis develops when vein walls or valves weaken, restricting upward blood flow and allowing fluid to collect in the legs. Common contributing factors include:

  • Previous blood clots or vein injuries
  • Congestive heart failure or coronary artery disease
  • Kidney disease or fluid retention disorders
  • Pregnancy, which can restrict venous return

Symptoms

Early signs often begin gradually and may worsen over time:

  • Swelling in the feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • Heaviness, aching, or a feeling of fullness in the legs
  • Visible or bulging varicose veins
  • Skin discoloration or thickening (venous stasis dermatitis)
  • Open sores or ulcers on the lower legs in advanced stages

Treatment Options

The goal of treatment is to improve circulation, reduce swelling, and prevent ulcers. Common treatment methods include:

  • Leg elevation — raising the legs above heart level to improve venous return
  • Compression stockings to minimize fluid buildup
  • Diuretics or medications to control swelling (as prescribed)
  • Wound care for existing ulcers
  • Surgical vein procedures for severe or chronic cases

Early treatment can prevent serious complications.
