Foot Fractures

Comprehensive Care for Broken or Fractured Bones in the Foot

Understanding Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment for Foot Fractures

A foot fracture refers to a break in one or more of the 26 bones that make up the foot. Fractures can range from minor cracks caused by repetitive stress to severe breaks requiring surgical repair. Because the foot bears your full body weight and absorbs impact during daily activity, fractures are both common and potentially debilitating if left untreated.

Our podiatrists provide accurate diagnosis, imaging, and personalized treatment plans to promote full recovery and restore proper mobility.

Causes of Foot Fractures

Foot fractures most often occur from trauma or overuse. The most common causes include:

  • Slips, falls, or missteps that twist or bend the foot
  • Heavy objects dropped onto the foot
  • High-impact sports or overtraining
  • Car accidents or crush injuries
  • Repetitive stress on the bones over time (stress fractures)

Even simple activities can result in injury when balance, footwear, or surface conditions create excess strain on the foot.

Common Symptoms

Not all fractures cause immediate or obvious pain, which is why medical evaluation is essential. Symptoms may include:

  • Sharp or severe pain that worsens with pressure
  • Swelling, bruising, or redness
  • Difficulty walking or standing
  • Tenderness at the site of injury
  • Visible deformity or protrusion of the bone

Because symptoms can mimic those of a sprain, an x-ray or CT scan is often required to confirm a fracture and determine the extent of damage.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the type and severity of the break:

  • Immobilization: Minor fractures can often be treated with a cast, boot, or splint to keep the bones aligned while they heal. Crutches may be used to prevent weight-bearing.
  • Reduction: If the bone is displaced, your doctor may perform a manual realignment procedure to restore proper positioning.
  • Surgery: Severe fractures or open wounds may require surgical stabilization using screws, plates, or pins to ensure proper healing and joint function.

Recovery typically takes 6–8 weeks, depending on the severity of the fracture and adherence to rehabilitation instructions.

When to Seek Medical Care

If you experience intense pain, swelling, or are unable to bear weight on your foot, seek professional care immediately. Early diagnosis helps prevent long-term complications such as improper bone alignment or chronic pain.
