Ankle Sprains

Fast Recovery and Lasting Stability
Treating Sprained Ankles with Expert Care
Ankle sprains are among the most common orthopedic injuries—affecting everyone from athletes to those with less active lifestyles. In the U.S., it’s estimated that more than 25,000 ankle sprains occur each day. Despite being common, a sprained ankle should always be treated seriously to ensure full recovery and prevent long-term instability.
Causes
An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments that support the joint are stretched or torn, usually from twisting or rolling the ankle. Common causes include:
- Stepping on uneven ground
- Awkwardly planting the foot while walking or running
- Having your foot stepped on during sports
These movements overstretch the ligaments, leading to pain, swelling, and limited movement.
Symptoms
The degree of pain and swelling depends on the severity of the sprain:
- Grade I: Mild stretching of ligaments, slight swelling, and minor pain. Walking is usually possible.
- Grade II: Partial ligament tear, moderate pain, swelling, and bruising. Walking is painful but manageable in short distances.
- Grade III: Complete ligament tear, significant pain, swelling, and instability. Walking is often impossible without crutches.
Most sprains cause pain on the outside of the ankle, though about 10% affect the inside area.
Treatment
For Grade I and II sprains, home care using the R.I.C.E. method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) is typically effective:
- Rest and limit walking to avoid further strain
- Ice for 15–20 minutes several times daily
- Wrap lightly with an elastic bandage for support
- Keep your ankle elevated above heart level when resting
If symptoms persist after several days—or if you suspect a Grade III sprain—seek professional evaluation. Severe sprains may require bracing, physical therapy, or other medical treatment to restore stability and prevent chronic issues.
When to Seek Care
If your ankle pain doesn’t improve within a few days, or if swelling and bruising worsen, contact our office for a full evaluation. Early treatment helps prevent long-term weakness or recurrent sprains.
