Blisters

Painful Skin Bubbles on the Feet
Causes, Treatment, and Prevention of Foot Blisters
Foot blisters are small, fluid-filled pockets that form on the skin due to friction, pressure, or irritation. While they’re common among runners, hikers, and those on their feet for long periods, blisters can also result from ill-fitting shoes or moisture buildup. Though often minor, untreated blisters can become painful or infected, especially for individuals with diabetes or circulation issues.
Causes
Blisters form when the upper layers of skin separate due to friction or heat, and fluid collects beneath the surface.
Common causes include:
- Tight or poorly fitted shoes
- Repetitive rubbing during walking or exercise
- Moisture from sweat or wet socks
- Burns, frostbite, or allergic reactions
- Certain skin conditions or infections
Symptoms
Typical blister symptoms include:
- Clear, bubble-like pockets of skin filled with fluid
- Redness or soreness around the affected area
- Discomfort when walking or wearing shoes
- Infected blisters may appear cloudy, swollen, or warm to the touch
Treatment
Most blisters heal on their own within a few days if protected from further irritation.
To promote healing:
- Wash the area gently and keep it clean and dry.
- Cover the blister with a sterile bandage or blister pad.
- Avoid popping the blister; if it breaks, apply antibiotic ointment and re-cover with a clean dressing.
- Wear well-fitted, cushioned footwear to prevent friction.
If a blister shows signs of infection—such as redness, warmth, swelling, or drainage—see your podiatrist for professional care. Patients with diabetes should always seek prompt treatment for any foot blisters.
Prevention
- Choose properly fitted shoes and moisture-wicking socks.
- Use moleskin or blister-prevention patches on known friction spots.
- Keep feet clean and dry during activity.
- Change socks frequently when exercising or in hot weather.
