Athlete's Foot

Common Fungal Skin Infection

Relief and Prevention for Itchy, Irritated Feet

Athlete’s foot is a contagious fungal infection that affects the skin on the feet, often beginning between the toes. It causes itching, burning, redness, and cracking — and can spread to the toenails or hands if left untreated. Although it’s most common among athletes, anyone exposed to warm, damp environments can develop this infection.

Causes

Athlete’s foot is caused by fungi that thrive in moist, enclosed spaces such as shoes, locker rooms, and communal showers. You can contract it by walking barefoot in these areas or sharing shoes, socks, or towels with someone who has the infection.

Risk factors include:

  • Excessive sweating or wearing tight shoes
  • Not drying feet thoroughly after bathing
  • Reusing damp socks or footwear
  • Weakened immune system

Symptoms

Typical signs of athlete’s foot include:

  • Red, itchy, or peeling skin between the toes
  • Burning or stinging sensations
  • Cracked heels or dry, flaky skin
  • Blisters that may ooze or crust over

Without treatment, the infection can spread to toenails (causing thick, discolored nails) or to the hands.

Treatment

Mild cases can often be treated with over-the-counter antifungal creams or sprays.
For more persistent or severe infections, your podiatrist may recommend:

  • Prescription-strength antifungal medication (topical or oral)
  • Medicated foot soaks to reduce odor and inflammation
  • Hygiene guidance to prevent reinfection

Prevention

  • Keep feet clean and dry, especially between the toes.
  • Change socks daily and avoid wearing the same shoes two days in a row.
  • Use antifungal powder or spray if you’re prone to infections.
  • Always wear sandals in public showers or locker rooms.

If itching or redness lasts more than a few days, schedule an appointment for proper diagnosis and treatment. Early care prevents spreading and helps restore comfort quickly.
