Understanding and Treating Ankle Fractures

A fractured ankle, also known as a broken ankle, occurs when one or more of the bones forming the joint are partially or completely broken. Fractures range from minor cracks to multiple breaks with joint displacement. Because these injuries can mimic sprains, it’s important to have any ankle injury evaluated by a doctor for proper healing.

Causes
Ankle fractures happen when the joint moves beyond its normal range of motion. Common causes include rolling or twisting the ankle, landing awkwardly, or sudden impact during sports or falls. Even routine activities on uneven surfaces can cause fractures.

Symptoms
Typical signs include sharp pain, swelling, bruising, deformity, or inability to walk. Unlike sprains, fractures cause persistent pain until treated.

Treatment
Minor fractures often heal with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (R.I.C.E.) plus bracing or casting. Severe fractures may require surgery to realign bones. Recovery usually takes 4–8 weeks depending on severity.
