Targeted Relief for Nerve Pain in the Feet

Understanding and Treating Neuromas

Neuromas are a painful condition caused by the thickening or irritation of a nerve, most commonly between the third and fourth toes. This nerve compression leads to burning, stabbing pain, tingling, or numbness in the toes or ball of the foot. The most common type, Morton’s Neuroma, often affects women who wear high heels or narrow shoes. While neuromas are benign, early treatment is key to preventing long-term nerve damage.

Causes

Neuromas form when a nerve is compressed or irritated within a confined space, causing it to swell and thicken. Common causes include:

  • Tight or high-heeled shoes that squeeze the toes together
  • Abnormal foot structure, such as flat feet, bunions, or hammertoes
  • Injury or trauma, including puncture wounds or post-surgical scarring
  • Repetitive stress from running or high-impact activities

Over time, repeated compression of the nerve can lead to chronic inflammation and persistent pain.

Symptoms

Neuroma symptoms often begin gradually and worsen over time. You may notice:

  • Burning or sharp pain in the ball of the foot
  • Numbness or tingling in the toes
  • Cramping or discomfort that radiates into the forefoot
  • A feeling of a pebble or fold in the sock under your toes
  • Pain that worsens with tight shoes and improves with rest or massage

If untreated, the pain can become constant—even when not wearing shoes.

Treatment Options

Most neuromas respond well to non-surgical treatments, especially when detected early.

Conservative Care:

  • Changing to wider, supportive footwear
  • Using custom orthotics or metatarsal pads to offload pressure
  • Applying ice and resting the foot
  • Taking anti-inflammatory medications
  • Receiving cortisone or anesthetic injections to reduce inflammation

Surgical Options:
If conservative treatment fails to relieve symptoms, your podiatrist may recommend
surgery to remove the thickened nerve or release the ligament that compresses it. Surgical recovery is typically quick, and most patients experience lasting relief.

When to Seek Care

Persistent pain, tingling, or numbness in the ball of your foot should not be ignored. Early evaluation and treatment can prevent permanent nerve damage and restore your comfort.
